Hidden between the mountains of the Western Lake District and the stunning Cumbrian coast sits the often overlooked market town of Egremont. This historic settlement dates back over 1,000 years and has a rich history as an important strategic Cumbrian seat. Within the town centre are the remains of Egremont Castle, a motte and bailey castle situated on the site of an ancient Danish fort. The castle fell into disrepair but remains an interesting place to explore.
Egremont was traditionally known for its weaving and dying industries with mining and quarrying also providing industrial employment for people both local and otherwise. These days Egremont’s main manufacturing industries have dropped off and instead tourism and a bustling visitor economy bring people and employment to the town. A huge draw to Egremont for people far and wide is the annual Crab Fair which doesn’t have anything to do with crabs at all but hosts a variety of fun and bizarre activities such as greasy pole climbing and the world gurning championships. In fact, its reputed to be one of the oldest fairs in the world!
Besides taking part in weird and wonderful events, your visit to Egremont should include a walk along the River Ehen which has plenty of paths and trails suited to both trekkers and cyclists. Those interested in birdlife, don’t forget your binoculars! The town centre has a variety of shops, eateries and a thriving arts scene based out of the Florence Arts Centre which was once the last working deep iron ore mine providing ore and haematite for the cosmetics, jewellery and manufacturing industries.
One of the highlights of any visit to Egremont is a visit to the Florence Arts Centre, just to the south of the town. Here you can take part in life art classes, craft sessions, wellbeing workshops, family story time sessions, open mic sessions and mine tours of the Florence Mine, as well as a whole heap of other activities including visiting the resident exhibition at the art gallery. With a varied calendar of events happening all year round, The Flo is not to be missed.
The town of Egremont is found just 2 miles from the coast of Cumbria, where the county juts out at its most western point. Less than 3 miles away is the seaside resort of St. Bees and 6 miles north is the larger, busier town of Whitehaven. Ennerdale Water is the nearest Lake District lake which is approximately 10 miles away and the closest fells are Dent and Cold Fell which sit along the edge of the Western Lake District.
