The coastal village of St Bees is the most westerly point in northern England and sits nestled under St Bees Head, a rocky outcrop of sea cliffs which overlook the Isle of Man on a clear day. St Bees is a short distance from Whitehaven to the north, the Lake District National Park to the east and is the only stretch of Heritage Coast between Wales and Scotland. Here you’ll find long sandy beaches and high coastal walking routes overlooked on high by many different species of birds, including puffins, terns and guillemots. St Bees Head is the start of England’s Coast to Coast walking route which crosses the narrow northern neck of England to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire. This pretty seaside village has long been a popular holiday resort and welcomes visitors all year round.
Choose a place to stay near St Bees beach and take advantage of this peaceful place with a stroll along the promenade, explore rock pools with the kids or discover beachcombing treasures. If you look up, you’ll be able to see the Lake District fells inland and a short drive will find you in Wasdale near Wast Water, Ennerdale or Loweswater – three of the most remote and picturesque lakes which can be tricky to get to from other places.
With traditional country pubs offering hearty local food scattered throughout the countryside you won’t have to travel far to find your dinner. Enjoy watching the weather roll across the horizon from the beachfront café at St Bees which serves ice creams, cakes, hot drinks, breakfast and lunch. For a wider choice of restaurants and takeaways, Whitehaven is only 4 miles drive away and here you can find a variety of cuisines, from fish and chips to fine dining.
Apart from the beach, a café, a few pubs and a small local shop, there isn’t much else at St Bees which is largely part of its charm. For a remote and rural stay close to the beach and within easy reach of popular walking routes, St Bees is ideal. If you’re looking for more entertainment then head to Whitehaven, Maryport or Workington for a wider choice of eateries, local events and plenty of shops. Return to your base at St Bees for a seaside staycation off the beaten path.
St Bees Cumbria is a beautiful place to stay and its proximity to both the coast and the Lakes offers all the benefits of a rural retreat with none of the crowds. The popular hotspots are all within driving distance, but stay closer to the village to visit Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway or the Beacon Museum in Whitehaven. Jump on a train from St Bees up to historic Carlisle and visit Carlisle Castle and Hadrian’s Wall or head south down the beautiful coast to the southern beaches at Silecroft and Millom, across the bay to the Furness Peninsula and down to Morecambe – one of the most scenic routes in the country.
