Ravenglass

A true hidden gem in the western Lakes

Ravenglass is a tiny unassuming village on the coast of Cumbria that is surprisingly notable for more than a few reasons. Sitting at the confluence of the rivers Esk, Irt and Mite, there is not a whole lot here apart from a couple of pubs, a stunning beach, one of the oldest Roman structures in the UK and one of the most famous single-gauge railways in the UK. Oh, and it’s just a mile from one of the country’s most haunted houses, Muncaster Castle.

As the only coastal town within the boundary of the Lake District National Park, Ravenglass is part of not one but two UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the English Lakes and the Frontiers of the Roman Empire which collectively covers Hadrian’s Wall and many of the associated Roman sites scattered across northwest Cumbria.

The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway is a steam railway that travels the short distance from Ravenglass on the coast to Eskdale, a picturesque valley leading to Wasdale and Wast Water. Visitors can take the train one way and walk back or opt for a roundtrip with a stop for a walk in Eskdale to take in the stunning Stanley Ghyll Force waterfalls, Eskdale Mill which is a water-powered cornmill recently restored and well worth a visit.

Ravenglass beach is a long sandy stretch that is bisected by the rivers on which this estuary sits and a haven for coastal birdlife. Just south of the village is the Ravenglass Roman Bath House which with its semi-intact walls is one of the best preserved Roman buildings left standing. It is thought that the baths served a Roman fort nearby, of which not much evidence is left. A visit to Muncaster Castle is a must as well. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, there is an impressive bird of prey centre here, extensive gardens, lots of fun activities for the kids and events on all year round.

Nearby

Although Ravenglass itself is small, a stay here offers visitors the opportunity to explore this gorgeous corner of the Lake District. Local events are hosted both at Muncaster Castle which include Halloween parties, Christmas events, wellbeing workshops, inspirational talks and other seasonal events. Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway also host a calendar of events throughout the year including Santa train rides and steam galas. Don’t forget to visit Drigg Beach which is one of the most unspoilt beaches along the coast or head south to explore Millom and Haverigg.

Location

The small villages of Boot, Ravenglass and Eskdale Green all sit within the Eskdale valley through which the River Esk meanders along. To reach Ravenglass you can either take the A595 coastal road south from Whitehaven, which is approximately 17 miles to the north, or get here via the A590 which skirts the south of the national park before turning north on the A595. As with many scenic locations in western Cumbria, Ravenglass is not the easiest place to get to but a visit here rewards those who bother. With a stunning backdrop of Lake District mountains overlooking the beautiful coastline, Ravenglass should be on your list of places to visit in Cumbria.
