Wasdale

Where still waters run deep

Wasdale is one of the largest valleys in the Lake District and is home to the deepest lake in England, Wast Water. This stunning lake sprawls along much of the valley floor, surrounded on three sides by some of the highest peaks in the country, including Scafell Pike, Scafell and Great Gable. The valley contains two small hamlets, Wasdale Head, Nether Wasdale and is most often reached via the village of Gosforth which is only a short distance from the coast. Wasdale is a rugged, remote and tranquil area in the western Lake District and is popular with climbers, walkers and even scuba divers who come to explore the hidden depths of this beautiful lake. The views from Wasdale change minute by minute as the calm waters reflect the sky and mountains above, making it one of the most spectacular lakes in the Lake District National Park.

Camping at Wasdale Head is one of the most popular ways for visitors to experience this area. Wasdale Campsite is owned by the National Trust and sits at Wasdale Head, just a short walk from the Wasdale Head Inn which also has rooms, offers hearty Cumbria meals and locally brewed ales. 1692 Wasdale at Gosforth is a local boutique hotel just a short drive from Wasdale and comes highly recommended.

Other places to eat in Wasdale are limited so either bank on driving for your dinner or bring provisions with you. There are comforting home-cooked meals at The Screes Inn at Nether Wasdale and also at Nether Wasdale is the Sawmill Café and Farm Shop where you can find tasty breakfasts and lunches with indoor seating for cooler days and outdoor benches next to a pretty stream for those warm summer months. A wider variety of shops and eateries can be found at Gosforth or Santon Bridge, which are a short car journey from Nether Wasdale.

Nearby

Wasdale is the perfect place to do a little or a lot. Relax in peace along the shores of Wast Water, enjoy long rambling walks along the valley floor through woodlands and streams or just enjoy the tranquility here. Alternatively, opt to climb a fell or two. Walking up Scafell Pike from Wasdale is a scenic challenge but well worth the effort. Wasdale Head car park is a handy place to start from and the pub welcomes you with open arms after your exertion.

Location

Jump in the car and travel the short distance to the coast and spend a day on Drigg Sand Dunes and Beach, Seascale Beach or north to Braystones Beach. You’re not far from Muncaster Castle or the Ravenglass to Eskdale Heritage Railway – both are a fun way to spend time in west Cumbria for the whole family. Reach Wasdale via the A595 that travels down the Cumbrian coast from Whitehaven or journey here along the A590 from the south which skirts the southern perimeter of the national park.
