The sleepy coastal town of Millom in Cumbria was once an 18th century industrial town, thriving on the iron ore mined from nearby Hodbarrow. These days the mine has been transformed into RSPB Hodbarrow Nature Reserve and the town of Millom is less industrious but no less welcoming. Situated on the southwest coast of Cumbria on the edge of the Lake District National Park, the town overlooks the Duddon Estuary and has easy access to several picturesque beaches. This area sees less visitors than other Lake District hotspots, making Millom a wonderful place to stay for those looking for peace and quiet near the sea whilst still being close to many of the attractions of the Western Lakes.
For visitors to Cumbria looking for calm, quiet and salty sea air, there is no better place to stay in the Western Lakes than Millom. The town hosts a raft of self-catering cottages, cosy guesthouses and quirky campsites providing plenty of accommodation options for families, couples, groups and solo travellers. Whether you’re looking for a seaside apartment complete with balcony for a sundowner or a large, spacious detached cottage for you and your friends, Millom is a bit of a hidden gem.
The village itself has a couple of local pubs and as you’d expect from a coastal town, just as many fish and chip shops. Ask for the catch of the day and take your chips along a short walk to Millom Beach to watch the sunset. There are plenty of ice cream vans and shops conveniently located near to the beaches, which should keep the kids, and adults, happy and if sandy shores don’t rock your boat, Millom Park is a great space for people of all ages to relax and enjoy the views.
Stay close to the village to explore the local beaches at Millom and Haverigg or meander around the headland to 3-mile long Silecroft Beach where you’ll be lucky if you see more than a handful of people on this stunning sandy stretch. Millom is overlooked by Black Combe which is worth the climb for panoramic views of the sea and inland towards the dramatic Lake District fells skyline.
To find Millom, Cumbria, you’ll need to take either the A590 from Kendal and the M6 which traverses across the south of Cumbria, skirting the southern Lake District, or from the north take the A595 which follows the endless Cumbrian Coast from Whitehaven. This secret corner of Cumbria is not the easiest place to get to, but the journey is a fantastic one and we promise it’s well worth the effort.
