The historic town of Wigton Cumbria can be found north of the Lake District National Park and south of the Solway Firth, Bowness-on-Solway and the capital city of Carlisle. Dating back over 1200 years, this pretty market town is a delightful mixture of winding streets and hidden alleyways, independent shops and ancient landmarks. People settled in Wigton before medieval times and since then the town has hosted a carousel of interlopers, most notable of which was the Roman empire who built a cavalry station near the River Waver just south of Wigton that served soldiers garrisoned at Hadrian’s Wall.
Visitors to Wigton can take a heritage trail that starts at the Market Hall in the centre of Wigton and details the interesting history of this quaint town, strategically located between the mountains and the sea. Even if you’re not interested in history, there is still plenty to see and do around Wigton. Holding true to its ancient market charter there is an indoor and outdoor market held every week in Wigton which features the best local produce and crafts around and is well worth a visit. There is a small, locally run pool which is open all year round and short drive will get you to Watchtree Nature Reserve or the Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre, both of which will keep the little ones entertained for a while.
Outside of the town, Hadrian’s Wall begins at Bowness-on-Solway, just north of Wigton, and you can find various forts, ruins and castles in differing states along this historic route. The town is flanked by mountain views from the nearby Lake District and the flat plains of the coastal estuary towards Scotland and visitors can enjoy scenic walks, cycle routes and diverse natural landscapes that host plenty of animal, bird and plant life. With Solway AONB just a short hop away, this rural retreat in Cumbria makes an ideal base for exploring the best northern Cumbria has to offer.
From music festivals to food markets, swim, bike and running races to carnivals and rallies, there are a whole host of events in and around Wigton to enjoy during your visit here. Solfest is a renowned local music festival often featuring international artists and is held close to Wigton, as is Taste Cumbria, an exciting food festival that showcases wares from Cumbrian artisans, makers and producers.
To find Wigton, journey southwest from nearby Carlisle or northeast from Whitehaven, Workington and Maryport. The town can be accessed from main roads to the north and south or over Caldbeck from Penrith. Its central location and picturesque scenery make this a wonderful place to stay and explore the northern Lakes, historic Carlisle and the stunning Solway Coast.
