Seascale

Sleepy seaside village close to the western Lakes

The small seaside village of Seascale nestles on the coast amidst miles and miles of endless sandy beach in front of the stunning backdrop of the western Lake District mountains. Made popular by the arrival of the trainline during Victorian times, although the village can be traced back to Norse and Roman times, it wasn’t until the 1800s that northerners travelled here to take in the bracing sea air and picturesque scenery.

Visitors to Seascale will not only be able to explore Seascale beach but Seascale Golf Club is also an enjoyable way to spend the day, overlooking both the beach and the fells. In the village itself there are plenty of places to stay, a café, local shop, fitness centre and by the sea you can find Seascale fish and chips. The beach has a pretty jetty and this whole area is dotted with remnants of its heritage with cannons on the sea front and Victorian architecture mixed with more modern buildings.

The village sits on the Cumbrian Coast railway line which is one of the most scenic rail routes in the UK. Travelling from Barrow in the south to Carlisle in the north, this line follows the coast hopping from seaside town to seaside town and linking up the west coast of Cumbria with the north and south of the county.

Seascale is a lovely place to spend time at the beach and makes a good base from which to explore the western lakes and fells. Equally, if you’re passing through, stop for an ice cream and a spot of beachcombing before heading on your way, not least for the glimpse of Sellafield jutting out further north along the seafront.

Nearby

Although Seascale is a small village, it is around 9 miles from Egremont and 15 miles to Whitehaven where there are large shops, places to eat, entertainment for the kids and more amenities. For those wanting a quiet place to explore the coast of Cumbria, then we can think of no better place than Seascale. With essential amenities less than 30 minutes’ drive away, you’re far enough away from busier towns to enjoy a seaside retreat without having to suffer the complexities of a more remote location.

Location

Seascale sits on the coast just a short distance away from Gosforth which is the gateway to Eskdale, Wasdale and Wast Water. Although you can reach Scafell Pike and the Scafell massif on foot from Borrowdale and the Langdales, the only roads into these remote western lakes and mountains come via the coastal road. To get to Seascale, take the A595 from the south past Millom, Haverigg and Ravenglass or north from Whitehaven and Egremont.
