The beautiful town of Keswick Cumbria is arguably one of the most popular in the Lake District, nestled as it is in between the peaks of Catbells, Swinside, Walla Crag, Latrigg and Skiddaw. In fact, the northern fells of the Lakes almost form a barrier around Keswick, allowing space only for Bassenthwaite Lake to the north of the town and Derwentwater to the south. Visitors travel to Keswick all year round to hike in the mountains and play on the water – there is no such thing as bad weather in Cumbria, just bad kit!
Within Keswick, you’ll find a wonderful mix of independent shops and high street chains, walking apparel retailers and quirky eateries, gin shops and gift shops, traditional pubs and modern restaurants and bars. There is a thriving theatre here, the Theatre by the Lake, aptly named for its pretty location on the edge of the town next to the lake, as well as an independent cinema and more activity centres and adventure companies than you could possibly ever hope to try.
People of all ages love the rural feel and breathtaking backdrop which combined with plenty of things to do in Keswick, places to stay and places to eat in Keswick makes this a wonderful base for exploring this incredible area. A short walk from the town centre will find you on the slopes of Latrigg or Catbells, perfect peaks for legs of all shapes and sizes, or jump on the bus or in the car for a scenic drive through the simply stunning Borrowdale Valley to Honister Pass and Buttermere and Crummock Water beyond.
As a year round visitor destination, there is always something on in and around Keswick. From live theatre and music to mountain festivals, races and twice-weekly markets, Keswick caters to all tastes. Try open water swimming or hire paddleboards on Derwentwater, ghyll scrambling, abseiling, rock climbing, hiking, sailing are also all available to try here too, so whether you want to do a little or a lot, Keswick is an excellent choice of place to stay.
Keswick sits on the A66 between Penrith and Cockermouth, close to the northern boundary of the Lake District and only 30 mins drive from Carlisle, the coast and the motorway. From here you can take the bus in every direction to explore all corners of northern Cumbria, with Carlisle only a ride away and Ambleside, Grasmere and Windermere are also only a short hop on the bus south too.
