The charming Victorian seaside resort of Silloth is situated on the northwestern shores of Cumbria, approximately 22 miles west of Carlisle and 12 miles north of Maryport, the largest nearby town. The town sprung up due to its proximity to the end of the railway, making it the closest coastal port to Carlisle, and a haven for holidaymakers during the Victorian era. From the salt marshes to the north and dune-backed sandy beaches to the south, this area of Solway is home to incredible scenery with breathtaking views across the Solway Firth to Scotland beyond.
Silloth has an exceptionally mild climate and is a year round visitor destination. With dozens of holiday parks just a short distance from the town, there is a steady flow of people enjoying this stunning coastal area no matter what the season. The town has pretty, wide tree-lined streets and a large 36 acre village green right on the seafront. Recent improvements to the town have included a rejuvenated children’s park, complete with splash park, work on the scenic promenade and investment in local amenities on and around Silloth green.
There are a handful of lovely independent shops in Silloth as well as plenty of local eateries including both cafes and a couple of Silloth pubs. Things to do in Silloth invariably include a walk along the beautiful Silloth beach, a visit to Silloth Golf Club for a couple of holes or a drink and Silloth fish and chips on the promenade accompanied by one of the best sunsets in Cumbria. The busy docks are interesting to visit and the Discovery Centre in town houses a wonderful tourist information and permanent exhibition about the Solway Coast National Landscape, formerly the Solway Coast AONB.
The influx of visitors to Silloth each season are catered to with a raft of local events including a festival on the village green, vintage rallies, a famous beer festival, kite festival and live music events across the Solway Coast. With so many places to stay in Silloth and outside of the town, holiday parks in the area also host their own calendar of events ensuring there are plenty of ways to keep the whole family entertained.
Silloth can be reached easily from Maryport via the B5300 coast road or the A595 and B5302 from Carlisle. This stretch of pretty coast includes the villages of Skinburness, Beckfoot and Bowness-on-Solway. From nature reserves to heritage trails, national cycleways and coastal walking paths, Silloth and the surrounding area of Solway is a stunning part of Cumbria and a perfect base for exploring the coast and the Lakes, historic Carlisle and the nearby fells.
