John wishes to tell the fascinating story of the construction and characters associated with the Military Road. Constructed in the aftermath of the failed 1745 Jacobite rebellion, it resulted in destruction of large sections of Hadrian’s Wall. Although it was considered to be an expensive and ineffective white elephant at the time, it is now proving – somewhat ironically – its worth as a popular and convenient route for visitors to access Hadrian’s Wall!
