Sherlock Holmes & the Curious Case of the Girt Dog This year we present a brand new theatrical performance for you in the Castle Library. The world’s greatest detective Sherlock Holmes finds himself summoned to Muncaster Castle to investigate The Curious Case of the Girt Dog. A monstrous hound is loose on the local fells feasting on Lord Muncaster’s sheep. But is it actually a stray hound? Some local folk believe it to be a Werewolf! so Sherlock Holmes must deduce who or what the ravenous beast is. Could it be one of the performers from Cirque Du Lune? a company of Circus artists visiting the castle to perform their spectacular Halloween show? Perhaps it’s Lord Muncaster himself or even one of the audience? All will become clear as we approach the full moon in this year’s riotous Halloween show featuring magic, live music and spectacular circus. Suitable for all ages. Please call 01229717614 if you have any access requirements before booking. The Girt Dog This year’s show is inspired by the famous local story of The Girt (Big) Dog a historic Cumbrian legend from the 1800’s that told of an actual beast that did indeed stalk the fells of Ennerdale consuming sheep. The appearance of the beast coincided with the arrival of a troupe of traveling circus people who were accused of losing a tiger or similar exotic creature. However history records they were innocent, and the creature was in fact a large dog/wolf crossbreed animal imported from Tasmania.
